  1. * Is there a special reason why this place uses 启名 rather than 起名? I’ve not seen this before.

    * I’m not sure, but I think it’s that to 起名 means just to name something, wheras 启名 means to look at dates and family name and so on to pick an auspicious name.

    * And I have, of course, been able to find absolutely no evidence to justify this.

    * I imagine the best course of action to take would be just to ask the owners of the business. Crazy idea, I know…

    * Roddy, just how many pictures do you have in your collection of ‘potential candidate’ photos? I’ve heard you say that the database is already stocked into June– If you’ve covered enough ground to pick these gems and more, I would be impressed if you could actually pull the location of this shop from memory (please don’t waste an extra thought on it).

    * Currently at 151 in the database, give or take. These aren’t ‘candidates’, they are just timed to appear over the next couple of months so that if I get bored the site will continue running. As it is, I’m still enjoying taking the photos, and just uploaded 20 more (which will be appearing one a day at about 11.30pm Beijing time, for the next few weeks). I can’t remember the exact location of the shop, but it’s somewhere on 平安里, north side of the road, east of the junction with 德胜门内. Actually, anyone who knew Beijing very well (obsessively so) could mark out my routes on a map . . .
